Within the last month I threw out my back, causing a string of visits to the chiropractor. Now, in Minnesota, the same thing happened and I went to a chiropractor who didn't have regular massage therapy sessions scheduled for his clients before their adjustments. The most I got was a few minutes lying on a heated massage table with rollers going up and down my backside.
My chiropractor here firmly believes that his clients get better adjustments if they first get a massage ... from a massage therapist. In fact, the receptionist tries to schedule each patient with the same massage therapist.
I have been into the chiropractor a total of 12 times. I saw one massage therapist ... the one with seniority ... on my second visit because for one reason or another I didn't get one on my first visit. Then, I was switched to the newer massage therapist because of scheduling conflicts; and I've been seeing that massage therapist since.
Until today.
Today I was sitting in the waiting room, and my massage therapist swung back the old-western-style-saloon doors, didn't even look at me and took back a different patient who was also waiting. Then, the other massage therapist came out and called me back to her massage table.
As I walked in, she said, "Sorry. My iPod broke, so you get country today. I have to have some kind of background noise." Then, she proceeded to turn up the volume. A song played and then the radio station played several commercials, and when another song came on, my supposedly 15 minute massage was finished. As opposed to the nice relaxation music I normally hear with my previous massage therapist. It was so hard to relax.
Previously, I had wanted to have the opportunity to compare the two massage styles of the different therapists. And, now I don't ever want to go back to the therapist I saw today. Her hands were stronger, and she massaged deeper; but, she was jerky and it almost seemed like she was trying to rush through my massage. She quickly moved from one muscle group to the next, not even really spending time where I needed it. Then, she spent several minutes just on the base of my skull. It all felt extremely rushed. In fact, the other patient that had been taken back was still in his room with MY massage therapist when I left!
So, when I got down on the table for my adjustment, I had a really hard time relaxing enough to get a good adjustment. It was awful. It's amazing what a difference a good massage makes.
