We found the dress up clothes a week or so ago. I posted these photos on Facebook, so they aren't a surprise to most of you, my friends and family. The story behind it, is this:
Upon opening the box of dress up clothes, I saw many, many items which I made in the past. This one item stood out to me. I think it's because I never took a picture of it when Adam wore it for Halloween in 2009.
This cape was originally going to be green on the outside with a black lining. I cut out all the pieces for the cape when I cut out everyone's costumes last year (I made almost everyone's costumes ... two of four consisted of capes which made it easy), then set the fabric aside. Adam decided to be "helpful" and cut the green fabric in several places. So, I improvised. Instead of a cape with a lining, I rounded off the places he had cut and ironed them under about a 1/2-inch. Then, I sewed the green and black together so that it looked like the green was goo oozing down the black part of the cape. It worked since he wanted to be "Green Goo Guy," a made up super hero from Adam's imagination. I will never forget the despair I felt when I saw that he'd cut his costume. But, the satisfaction at making it work instead of purchasing new fabric outshines that despair by a mile.
So, on the day when we got out the dress up clothes, I almost lovingly caressed this cape. Adam wanted nothing to do with this cape, and instead put on the cape I made him for his birthday a few years ago. Even though I'd made him that cape too, I was crushed because this cape was much more a labor of love. So, I decided to see if it would fit on me. Then, out came the cap. And, now everyone will understand why I HATE buying hats for myself. The generic sizing of hats in the stores never fit my head! I always have to tuck in my ears because the hat is too big ... and I think that looks a little silly. So, on this day, the day we found the dress-up clothes, I was "Green Goo Guy" the protector of all mistakes and mishaps!
