This last weekend I was able to go to the major homeschool convention in Arizona. Jon and I went last year, and I felt much better prepared this year. Last year, I remember walking around the curriculum fair, picking up books and looking at them, not really knowing what it was I wanted or needed to find. This year, however, I was able to pick up a book, hold onto it for a while, then set it back down and tell myself, "I don't need to buy this right now. Wait and see if it's something we need later." Whew! All the stress I was feeling last year evaporated with one year of homeschooling experiences.
The workshops I attended were exactly what I needed. Last year I attended several that focused on Andrew and what I thought he needed, then I walked away with a 50 yard list of things I felt that I needed to add to our lives to help him. This year, I mainly attended the workshops that had nothing to do with teaching methods. For example, I attended workshops entitled: Transcripts: Doable, Easy & Fun; Jr. High Needs; Cutting Household Expenses; and The Busy Mom's Guide to Daytime: How to Fit Your Size 16 Day into a Size 10.
I was most surprised by how much I learned and of what I was reminded in all of the workshops I attended. And, I was surprised by other things as well (like the presenter who said Mormons are not Christian [not in so many words, but pretty much inferred it and didn't refute it]).
Because I like to look back through my blog and reread several of my blog posts, I am going to dedicate one blog entry for each of the workshops that gave me some insight ... at least those that I think my friends may benefit from (like how you can spend $20 on a water heater blanket and save about $80-100 per year on your electric bill).
So, watch out ... blog posts about homeschooling coming up!
