Free Enterprise Day

Yesterday was Free Enterprise day for our homeschool group.  Free Enterprise day is when each child makes something to sell, then they set up a table and sell their goods to the other children and parents in the group.  Our table had hot cocoa, banana bread, cookies, gift bags, and face painting.  There was another family that had hot cocoa too, so we were in competition.  I think Andrew sold more though because of our Cocomotion.  That thing rocks!

Andrew and Adam helped me make banana bread to sell.  We made mini loaves and sold them for $1 each.  Maryanne actually dug into the end of one of the loaves so we cut that one up for "samples."  The loaves were one of the first things to sell out ... next to some wooden swords that another child made.  (Which I didn't even get pictures of because they sold out so quickly!)

Kate decided to offer face painting.  She practiced at the ward trunk or treat, so she got pretty good at it.  But, she won't be doing that again next year.  She felt like she was spending way too much time on that and didn't get to do a whole lot of shopping.  Especially for the amount of money she made.  I think she learned a lot about supply, demand, and marketing.

Eliza made gift bags to sell.  She was very pleased with her profits on this project.  I showed her how to do it, and then let her go at it.  I couldn't feel more pleased for her when a couple of moms complimented me on the job that I did sewing the bags!  A simple reply with, "Eliza made them all by herself" was all that was needed to elevate those compliments.  She did a fantastic job!

Here are some of the things that other families made:

Bird Feeders

Bean Bags

 Chocolate Chip Cookies and Muffins

Chocolate Pumpkins
They also had chocolate turtles, dogs, and ladybugs

Our Cookies

Hot Buns ... potato rolls, not Jon!
(Who, by the way, came and I LOVE that he came just to hang out with us!)

Oreo Turkey Cookies

One family brought in their own little pie restaurant ... pie, pie a la mode, and root beer floats ... Yum!

Pumpkin Kits

A Ropin' Competition

Maryanne LOVED playing on the bull

Scented Pillows and European Chocolate Cookies

Snow Cones

This young man played the fiddle for money ... really talented.

In all, we had a blast.  Eliza wishes we could do it more than once a year.  This was a great exercise in learning how the free enterprise system works.  All the children did a great job, and my children already have ideas for what they'll make next year!

Wow, wow, wow!! Now I wish our co-op was a little bigger...We have five families in all, but I think something like this would work a little better if we had more families involved. That looks like so much fun!! What a terrific idea...I'll have to keep this one stored in my head for future co-op ideas. Maybe we can tweak it a little?? :)

Pink Day

Today I was sifting through all the clothing and pulling out clothes that were stained and torn, as well as clothing the children had outgrown. There was a huge pile of clothing to sort through, and an ever growing pile of clothes to donate.  At one point, I pulled out a pink t-shirt and asked, "Whose is this?" Someone said it was Maryanne's, which couldn't have been true because it was a size 8. It wasn't her color anyway ... So I tossed it in the donate pile. (In hind sight, I now think my mom gave it to Maryanne for Christmas, and she said that she wasn't sure what size to get for Maryanne. Whoops on my part.) That's when Adam exclaimed that he wanted a pink shirt. Other children chimed in with, "It is his color." (Referring to his Dressing Your Truth type.) Adam bolted toward the donate pile and seized the shirt, promptly pulling it over his head and the collared shirt he had on. (Later he removed the collared shirt, after much cajoling from ...

85+ Books!

It's been almost a year since I started keeping track of all the books I've read.  When it's all in a list ... by date ... it really makes me realize how much I read!  I burned through almost a book a day in the month of January: 24 books total ... the greatest number of books in one month!  After compiling the list, I figured I may as well share it with all my friends!  I've organized them by genre/topic ... and now I realize I need to branch out more!  Books I read multiple times this year have asterisks. REGENCY/HISTORICAL ROMANCE The Apothecary's Daughter, Julie Klassen Edenbrooke*, Julianne Donaldson The Girl in the Gatehouse, Julie Klassen The Heiress of Winterwood, Sarah Ladd The Maid of Fairbourne Hall, Juie Klassen Lady of Milkweed Manor, Julie Klassen Short Straw Bride, Karen Witemeyer The Silent Governess, Julie Klassen The Tutor's Daughter, Julie Klassen CLEAN ROMANCE Bah, Humbug!, Heather Horrocks The Cubicle Next Door*, Siri L....

My Two Teenagers

As personalities come, these two girls are like night and day. Both are silly at times, and both can be serious at times. And yet, that rarely happens at the same time! We have entered the world of teenagers, and it is quite the dramatic world! My oldest daughter is dealing with all the drama that teenagers bring: ostracism, judging, and feeling friendless. My younger teenager is just full of fun dramatics: silly faces and expressions, acting wonky and crazy, and saying that "everyone is my friend, even their mom and dad!" At any rate, I couldn't be more in love with these two. They fight over their littlest sister ("I get to hold her!"  "You've been hogging her all day!"), fight over who spends more time in the shower ("I do NOT spend an hour in the shower!"), and fight over who gets my MacBook ("She always gets to do her school on your computer!"  "But, all my stuff is on there!").  My world would be quite dramatical...
