Art -- Monet

On Fridays we get together with some friends for an art lesson and playtime.  We've been getting together since September, and each month one of the moms takes a turn teaching and providing the art lesson/project.  Last month the mom did a lot of Halloween crafts, and the month before that the mom did a unit on Mosaics.  I've loved having our own little art gallery in our loft, filled with all of the children's art!

This last Friday was the first time that the group met here for a lesson/project of my choosing.  I have a book that introduces children to the great art masters, and then provides an idea for an art project that helps them to learn how the artist created their masterpiece.

I decided that since Claude Monet's birthday is this month, that our first art project would be about Monet.  After reading in my book about Monet and the associating project, I looked online for more ideas.  One of my good friends posted on her blog about a couple of moms who post art ideas and projects on their blogs.  So, I checked them out and found step by step instructions for our project: the Water Lily Pond Painting.

First we talked about Monet, and I read the little biographical information that was listed in my book to the children.  I got a couple of books from the library and we looked at his paintings, talked about the difference between Impressionistic art and drawings that they do themselves.  I pointed out that when we are far away from the painting, we can see the picture, even if it is a little fuzzy; but, when we are close to the painting, it is just a bunch of blobs.  One of the books from the library is the one that the mom on her blog suggested and it shows a small section of the Water Lily Pond painting up close.  So, I was able to use that picture to explain what the lily pads looked like, and how to paint them.

Each of the children had their own set of watercolor paints and some sponges.  We basically did the art project together, step-by-step, just as the other mom did.  I sure am grateful for great minds who share their experiences and insight online for the rest of us!

I taped my paper on the wall to show the children how to do everything.  We even talked about foreground and background, perspective, and horizon.  It was so much fun!  I think I enjoyed it just as much as the children did.  Sadly, I won't be able to teach this Friday as I am flying to Utah for my grandmother's viewing and graveside service.  But, I will definitely have something fun to do the week after that!

Sorry to hear about your Grandmother's passing Marisa.

Those pictures are beautiful! Monet is one of my most favorite artist! Love him! You did a brilliant job (and your kiddos too)!

The pictures look great. BTW, did Kate spell her name differently?

I wish you were coming to Utah for other reasons...I'm sorry your grandmother passed away...

I love your art project. You did such a good job and it looks like the kids understood the lesson because each of their paintings are beautiful! :) Now I'm really excited to get back into our co-op. It won't be until after Christmas, unfortunately, but that gives me so much time to plan some music lessons!

Pink Day

Today I was sifting through all the clothing and pulling out clothes that were stained and torn, as well as clothing the children had outgrown. There was a huge pile of clothing to sort through, and an ever growing pile of clothes to donate.  At one point, I pulled out a pink t-shirt and asked, "Whose is this?" Someone said it was Maryanne's, which couldn't have been true because it was a size 8. It wasn't her color anyway ... So I tossed it in the donate pile. (In hind sight, I now think my mom gave it to Maryanne for Christmas, and she said that she wasn't sure what size to get for Maryanne. Whoops on my part.) That's when Adam exclaimed that he wanted a pink shirt. Other children chimed in with, "It is his color." (Referring to his Dressing Your Truth type.) Adam bolted toward the donate pile and seized the shirt, promptly pulling it over his head and the collared shirt he had on. (Later he removed the collared shirt, after much cajoling from ...

85+ Books!

It's been almost a year since I started keeping track of all the books I've read.  When it's all in a list ... by date ... it really makes me realize how much I read!  I burned through almost a book a day in the month of January: 24 books total ... the greatest number of books in one month!  After compiling the list, I figured I may as well share it with all my friends!  I've organized them by genre/topic ... and now I realize I need to branch out more!  Books I read multiple times this year have asterisks. REGENCY/HISTORICAL ROMANCE The Apothecary's Daughter, Julie Klassen Edenbrooke*, Julianne Donaldson The Girl in the Gatehouse, Julie Klassen The Heiress of Winterwood, Sarah Ladd The Maid of Fairbourne Hall, Juie Klassen Lady of Milkweed Manor, Julie Klassen Short Straw Bride, Karen Witemeyer The Silent Governess, Julie Klassen The Tutor's Daughter, Julie Klassen CLEAN ROMANCE Bah, Humbug!, Heather Horrocks The Cubicle Next Door*, Siri L....

My Two Teenagers

As personalities come, these two girls are like night and day. Both are silly at times, and both can be serious at times. And yet, that rarely happens at the same time! We have entered the world of teenagers, and it is quite the dramatic world! My oldest daughter is dealing with all the drama that teenagers bring: ostracism, judging, and feeling friendless. My younger teenager is just full of fun dramatics: silly faces and expressions, acting wonky and crazy, and saying that "everyone is my friend, even their mom and dad!" At any rate, I couldn't be more in love with these two. They fight over their littlest sister ("I get to hold her!"  "You've been hogging her all day!"), fight over who spends more time in the shower ("I do NOT spend an hour in the shower!"), and fight over who gets my MacBook ("She always gets to do her school on your computer!"  "But, all my stuff is on there!").  My world would be quite dramatical...
