Eliza chose to have a cooking birthday party this year. We did this for her sixth birthday, so I guess she enjoyed it since she wanted to do it again. It was a lot of fun. When her friends arrived they picked out an apron (you can see a glimpse of Eliza's on her lap) and put on a hair net. I made the aprons for the girls and was going to make them each a chef hat like the one Eliza is wearing, but I ran out of time. So, I thought it appropriate that the birthday-girl got the only chef hat.Anyway, I didn't get many pictures because, well, I was running the party. So the girls got their aprons and washed their hands. Then, they went to the first cooking station: cookie mix in a jar. They each made a jar of cookie mix to take home. The recipe was on the wall and they just had to follow it.
After that, they went to the kitchen table and assembled their lasagnas and their salads for their lunch. While the lasagnas cooked we played "Pin the cherry on the ice cream sundae" and a relay race. The relay race is something I thought up a while ago when I was asked to do an activity for Eliza's class at the church. But, at the church we can't cook, so we made play-doh. At the b-day party we made chocolate butter balls.
I split the girls into two teams and had the ingredients out on a table with a bowl, spoon, and measuring cups and spoons for each team to use. Then, they had lined up at one end of the room and ran to the table, measured one ingredient into the bowl, then ran back and tagged the next team member. They had a blast, and I found oats everywhere afterward!
At that point, we ate lunch then did presents and then the girls played before they rolled their chocolate butter balls in powdered sugar. They each got a little sack with all the recipes we used, their chocolate butter balls, and their cookie mix jar. And, of course, they got to take their aprons home also.
It was a lot of fun, and I'm glad Eliza did it. I have to say, the cooking party is one of my favorite b-day parties we've ever done. So easy to keep everyone busy without the chaos that usually accompanies games. Now I just need to get started on Kate's b-day party ... she wants to do an art party ... we'll see how that goes ... anyone have some good craft ideas for 6-7 year-olds?
