New White Board

My good friend, Lynette, reminded me that I have been neglecting my blog and people are still checking it for a new post.  *sigh*  I don't know how all the other homeschool moms do it all!  I guess maybe I like to read too much or something.  I finally sat down today and filled out a list of books that I've read (those that I remember reading) since the end of June.  It totaled 26 books.  I'm not counting the picture books I read to my children.  Twenty-six books!  I probably do read too much which causes me to neglect other good things in my life.

At any rate, I have a lot to share, and so little time to in which to share it.  So, bear with me, I'll try to update every now and then.

For today, I want to post about my new white board.  I LOVE LOVE LOVE my new white board!  I cannot say that enough.  It is soooooo fantastic!  We've made quite a few changes to our school room since last year:
  • Every child has their own desk.  There are currently five desks in our school room: one for each of the children, and mine.  Eliza's desk was just taken to her room tonight.  She's totally earned her study space ... she is my most diligent learner and I don't have to remind her to do anything!
  • The bookcase our computer center was on last year has been moved out into the living room as a sofa table behind my new couch (another post on another day will be dedicated to my new living room & dining room).  All the boxes and books that were on it before are still on it.
  • We finally painted a pantry/cabinet that we've had since our university apartment days (oh, about 11-12 years ago), and brought that in.  I quickly moved everything from the wire shelves that we had in here and put them in the cabinet.  Yay!  Doors to hide the chaos!!!
  • And, finally, we added some curtains and my new white board.
About 18 months ago, one of my friends in our Scottsdale church (who was a homeschooler) asked us to take care of her dogs while they were on vacation.  When we went to their house, I was given a tour of their school room, and  on one wall was a HUGE white board.  I asked her about it and she told me that it was just a shower wall.  I reflected that back to her, "A shower wall?"  Yes, indeed, it was a shower wall.  So, when I finally remembered *today* about the shower wall white board, I asked Jon to pick one up for me while he was out and about.  When he got home, I asked him how much it was for the 4'x8' shower wall: $13 ..... total.  I was shocked!  I knew it wouldn't be as expensive as buying a white board, but really?  $13????  Wahoo!  I'm never buying another white board again!  I'll just go get a shower wall and cut it down to size!

Anyway, I thought for sure it would be like most of our projects: the shower wall would lean against the wall for weeks before it was hung.  But, no!  Jon came home and immediately hung it on the wall.  He even brought home some molding to frame it and make it look nicer.  What an awesome hubby I have!  Now I have plenty of space to put Eliza's and Kate's math lessons on the same board at the same time instead of doing it one at a time ... plus, we can make our notebooking ideas list on the left.  I am so thrilled, I don't ever want to leave the school room.

You have beautiful cursive writing! :) When did you decide to start writing some things in cursive? It never occurred to me to do that until I saw this post. :) I'm not even sure I'm going to teach my kids how to write in cursive at all...I just can't decide. :)

My cousin bought herself a shower wall for a whiteboard not too long ago, too. I can't wait to have that kind of wall space! And how smart to frame it! :)

Thanks for the update. I'm so glad everything is going well with your home and your family. :) I wish I could say all of my free time is spent reading...I'm still trying to get back into that habit. It went down the tubes after Ss was born. :( I just need to get a book that I can really get into! Anyway, love ya, Marisa! It's good to see how things are going. :) :) :)

I would have never thought of a shower wall for a white board! What a lovely idea! We're using a "tiny" white board right now. . .since we left our big white board at home (in Kaysville) and I miss it so! *Sigh*
I concur with Lynette! It is good to hear from you. . .even if it's every once and a while. :)

Yay for an update! And yay for cursive! Lynette, I would totally suggest teaching your children cursive. Not so much so they can write it (which is awesome), but so they can read it. The letter forms can be so different! Plus, it gives them a far greater opportunity when it comes to developing their own signature. :)

AND if they really take to it and love cursive, it's only a few more steps to get into calligraphy. It's a dying art, and yet it will never go away. After all, type designers and font designers are the calligraphers of today. :)

Good point, Kristina! My hubby took a calligraphy class in college and I think Rr (my 7 year-old boy) could really get into it since he all ready tries to make his letters look "fancy." I agree that learning to write in cursive can make it easier to read, too...That's what I've been thinking: how are they supposed to read cursive. I still write in cursive (in my journals), but not too many others do. Anyway, thanks for a reminder of why it's a great thing to learn! :)

Pink Day

Today I was sifting through all the clothing and pulling out clothes that were stained and torn, as well as clothing the children had outgrown. There was a huge pile of clothing to sort through, and an ever growing pile of clothes to donate.  At one point, I pulled out a pink t-shirt and asked, "Whose is this?" Someone said it was Maryanne's, which couldn't have been true because it was a size 8. It wasn't her color anyway ... So I tossed it in the donate pile. (In hind sight, I now think my mom gave it to Maryanne for Christmas, and she said that she wasn't sure what size to get for Maryanne. Whoops on my part.) That's when Adam exclaimed that he wanted a pink shirt. Other children chimed in with, "It is his color." (Referring to his Dressing Your Truth type.) Adam bolted toward the donate pile and seized the shirt, promptly pulling it over his head and the collared shirt he had on. (Later he removed the collared shirt, after much cajoling from ...

85+ Books!

It's been almost a year since I started keeping track of all the books I've read.  When it's all in a list ... by date ... it really makes me realize how much I read!  I burned through almost a book a day in the month of January: 24 books total ... the greatest number of books in one month!  After compiling the list, I figured I may as well share it with all my friends!  I've organized them by genre/topic ... and now I realize I need to branch out more!  Books I read multiple times this year have asterisks. REGENCY/HISTORICAL ROMANCE The Apothecary's Daughter, Julie Klassen Edenbrooke*, Julianne Donaldson The Girl in the Gatehouse, Julie Klassen The Heiress of Winterwood, Sarah Ladd The Maid of Fairbourne Hall, Juie Klassen Lady of Milkweed Manor, Julie Klassen Short Straw Bride, Karen Witemeyer The Silent Governess, Julie Klassen The Tutor's Daughter, Julie Klassen CLEAN ROMANCE Bah, Humbug!, Heather Horrocks The Cubicle Next Door*, Siri L....

My Two Teenagers

As personalities come, these two girls are like night and day. Both are silly at times, and both can be serious at times. And yet, that rarely happens at the same time! We have entered the world of teenagers, and it is quite the dramatic world! My oldest daughter is dealing with all the drama that teenagers bring: ostracism, judging, and feeling friendless. My younger teenager is just full of fun dramatics: silly faces and expressions, acting wonky and crazy, and saying that "everyone is my friend, even their mom and dad!" At any rate, I couldn't be more in love with these two. They fight over their littlest sister ("I get to hold her!"  "You've been hogging her all day!"), fight over who spends more time in the shower ("I do NOT spend an hour in the shower!"), and fight over who gets my MacBook ("She always gets to do her school on your computer!"  "But, all my stuff is on there!").  My world would be quite dramatical...
