Halloween 2010

For Halloween this year, we went to two different trunk-or-treats.  Instead of trick-or-treating on Sunday, our church combined with another congregation to put on a trunk-or-treat on Friday, the 29th.  Basically, everyone who wanted to give out candy backed their car into a parking space and opened their decorated-for-Halloween trunks, then handed out candy to the children who were dressed up.  Oh, and it was also a kind of pseudo-carnival, and an announced but nothing was ever really judged chili cook-off.

Then, on Saturday, we went up to Prescott Valley to visit our good friends.  Their church also organized a trunk-or-treat with some other congregations, so we got to go to another one!  Halloween is always better when you get to dress up twice!  Our children had a blast playing with their friends (and they still play/hang out well together after months of being apart), and LOVED decorating their truck and our van.  They did way better decorating on Saturday night than we did on Friday night.

I love this picture of Maryanne sitting in the back of the van watching them block her exit with spider webs.

I did not make Adam's costume (see previous Halloween post about that), and he really wanted to be the black & grey Batman, not the blue one.  But, they didn't have the black & grey costume in his size.  So, we bought the next size up and I told him I'd alter it.  And, after seeing how huge the underwear part of this costume was (picture on the left), there was no way I was going to send him out in that!  It just looks down right ridiculous!  So, I shortened the rise on the pants, and that brought the legs up just enough that it was all I needed to do.  YAY!  Unfortunately, the picture on the right is the best shot I got of Adam throughout all of Halloween.

My little fairy ... her costume was also store-bought, but oh-so-cute!  On Friday night, they had dinner and games scheduled before trunk-or-treating, and by the time we got to do the trunk-or-treating Maryanne had taken off her skirt and wings.  But, if you look in the first photo, you'll see she's holding something in her right hand.  Those, my friends, are her sunglasses ... the one thing she did wear while trunk-or-treating ... and they had nothing to do with her costume.  Everyone kept trying to figure it out, especially because she was wearing them while it was dark outside.  Silly girl!

Kate in her genie costume.  This one I made ... without a store-bought pattern.  I used some pants she had and a shirt she had and just traced around them on the fabric and made alterations to them (like widening the legs a little, then putting an elastic casing around the ankles of the pants; and making the neckline a square, running a strip of velcro up the back, and adding the organza sleeves to the shirt), but the little belt thing she has on I free-handed and it turned out better than I expected.  Granted, she won't be wearing this next year .... she'll grow too much, but it looked awesome!

My friend's little girl wanted me to do her hair just like Eliza's and Maryanne's.  She is so adorable!

Running off to go Trunk-or-Treat!  Maryanne was so cute ... I'd remind her to say thank you, and she'd say in a sing-songy voice, "Thaaaaaank Yoooooouuuuu!"  It was such a fun weekend!

Ah! I love it! Even your altered costumes!! Hayden wanted to go as Spiderman when he was 3 (I think) and we had a 4-5 costume, so I just folded the top under so the pants fit and pinned it down. Not quite as well done as your altered costume, but it worked. :) I totally love Kate's costume. I was a genie for 3 years straight and my mom made my costume too! Good memories. :)

Pink Day

Today I was sifting through all the clothing and pulling out clothes that were stained and torn, as well as clothing the children had outgrown. There was a huge pile of clothing to sort through, and an ever growing pile of clothes to donate.  At one point, I pulled out a pink t-shirt and asked, "Whose is this?" Someone said it was Maryanne's, which couldn't have been true because it was a size 8. It wasn't her color anyway ... So I tossed it in the donate pile. (In hind sight, I now think my mom gave it to Maryanne for Christmas, and she said that she wasn't sure what size to get for Maryanne. Whoops on my part.) That's when Adam exclaimed that he wanted a pink shirt. Other children chimed in with, "It is his color." (Referring to his Dressing Your Truth type.) Adam bolted toward the donate pile and seized the shirt, promptly pulling it over his head and the collared shirt he had on. (Later he removed the collared shirt, after much cajoling from ...

85+ Books!

It's been almost a year since I started keeping track of all the books I've read.  When it's all in a list ... by date ... it really makes me realize how much I read!  I burned through almost a book a day in the month of January: 24 books total ... the greatest number of books in one month!  After compiling the list, I figured I may as well share it with all my friends!  I've organized them by genre/topic ... and now I realize I need to branch out more!  Books I read multiple times this year have asterisks. REGENCY/HISTORICAL ROMANCE The Apothecary's Daughter, Julie Klassen Edenbrooke*, Julianne Donaldson The Girl in the Gatehouse, Julie Klassen The Heiress of Winterwood, Sarah Ladd The Maid of Fairbourne Hall, Juie Klassen Lady of Milkweed Manor, Julie Klassen Short Straw Bride, Karen Witemeyer The Silent Governess, Julie Klassen The Tutor's Daughter, Julie Klassen CLEAN ROMANCE Bah, Humbug!, Heather Horrocks The Cubicle Next Door*, Siri L....

My Two Teenagers

As personalities come, these two girls are like night and day. Both are silly at times, and both can be serious at times. And yet, that rarely happens at the same time! We have entered the world of teenagers, and it is quite the dramatic world! My oldest daughter is dealing with all the drama that teenagers bring: ostracism, judging, and feeling friendless. My younger teenager is just full of fun dramatics: silly faces and expressions, acting wonky and crazy, and saying that "everyone is my friend, even their mom and dad!" At any rate, I couldn't be more in love with these two. They fight over their littlest sister ("I get to hold her!"  "You've been hogging her all day!"), fight over who spends more time in the shower ("I do NOT spend an hour in the shower!"), and fight over who gets my MacBook ("She always gets to do her school on your computer!"  "But, all my stuff is on there!").  My world would be quite dramatical...
