Memorial Day 2010

For Memorial Day, we made the day trip up to Prescott Valley, AZ to see our good friends, the Polls.  They recently moved to Prescot Valley from MN, so it was awesome to see them and hang out like we used to on Memorial Day.  About a ten minute drive away from their house there is a state park that we went to.  We ate lunch, then went on a hike.  Unfortunately, we went the round about way to get to this amazingly deserted beach.  The beach was only about 50 yards from where we ate our lunch, and we just didn't see it.  We chose to walk the other direction and we walked all the way around the lake, which ended at the beach.  And it was a great reward for all of that hiking.

The entire time we were on the beach reminded me of our Memorial Days back in Minnesota.  We'd go to a state park, eat lunch, then go play at the beach ... and yes, we did this with the Polls there as well, except we also had about 5 other families at our little shindig.

There are some slight differences between this lake and the one we'd go to back home in Minnesota.  At this lake there was a severe lack of sunfish to nibble on the boys' (and mens') exposed nipples, no weeds to swim around in, and ... oh, yeah, we weren't supposed to swim in this lake.  But, that didn't stop our children from "wading" in the water and "whoops-did-I-trip-over-the-nonexisitant-weeds" accidentally fall into the water.  Eliza perfected the full body submersion act of innocence.

Another difference between this lake and the one we'd gone to on previous Memorial Days is the solitude.  We were the only ones on this particular part of the beach.  It's interesting to me that we can live in a place that is populated almost by four times (or more) the number of people we had back in our little spot of Minnesota, and yet there we had a hard time finding a place on the beach large enough for our group.

At one point there was a gust of wind and Jon started packing up.  It kind of became the joke that the wind scared Jon into leaving ... the rest of us were just sitting around watching the children play, or dry off; we weren't feeling the rush to move on to the next activity.  And, it was so fantastic to just sit and relax in nature with some of our favorite people.  It made for a very tired, but relaxing day.  One that our family has cherished and cannot wait to repeat.

*The crux of being the photographer is that I am not in any of the pictures.  But, the fact that there are pictures, proves that I was there, right?  I ended up taking over 100 pictures just at the beach, and scaled that down to a few, but way too many to post here.  So, if you're interested in seeing more pictures, click here.

It looks like you had a wonderful Memorial day. I'm so jealous. It's nice to catch up with old friends, and to be able to relax. Good times, from the looks of it.
Oh and I'm never in any of my family outing pictures either. I like it that way though, I hate getting my picture taken. :)

Pink Day

Today I was sifting through all the clothing and pulling out clothes that were stained and torn, as well as clothing the children had outgrown. There was a huge pile of clothing to sort through, and an ever growing pile of clothes to donate.  At one point, I pulled out a pink t-shirt and asked, "Whose is this?" Someone said it was Maryanne's, which couldn't have been true because it was a size 8. It wasn't her color anyway ... So I tossed it in the donate pile. (In hind sight, I now think my mom gave it to Maryanne for Christmas, and she said that she wasn't sure what size to get for Maryanne. Whoops on my part.) That's when Adam exclaimed that he wanted a pink shirt. Other children chimed in with, "It is his color." (Referring to his Dressing Your Truth type.) Adam bolted toward the donate pile and seized the shirt, promptly pulling it over his head and the collared shirt he had on. (Later he removed the collared shirt, after much cajoling from ...

85+ Books!

It's been almost a year since I started keeping track of all the books I've read.  When it's all in a list ... by date ... it really makes me realize how much I read!  I burned through almost a book a day in the month of January: 24 books total ... the greatest number of books in one month!  After compiling the list, I figured I may as well share it with all my friends!  I've organized them by genre/topic ... and now I realize I need to branch out more!  Books I read multiple times this year have asterisks. REGENCY/HISTORICAL ROMANCE The Apothecary's Daughter, Julie Klassen Edenbrooke*, Julianne Donaldson The Girl in the Gatehouse, Julie Klassen The Heiress of Winterwood, Sarah Ladd The Maid of Fairbourne Hall, Juie Klassen Lady of Milkweed Manor, Julie Klassen Short Straw Bride, Karen Witemeyer The Silent Governess, Julie Klassen The Tutor's Daughter, Julie Klassen CLEAN ROMANCE Bah, Humbug!, Heather Horrocks The Cubicle Next Door*, Siri L....

My Two Teenagers

As personalities come, these two girls are like night and day. Both are silly at times, and both can be serious at times. And yet, that rarely happens at the same time! We have entered the world of teenagers, and it is quite the dramatic world! My oldest daughter is dealing with all the drama that teenagers bring: ostracism, judging, and feeling friendless. My younger teenager is just full of fun dramatics: silly faces and expressions, acting wonky and crazy, and saying that "everyone is my friend, even their mom and dad!" At any rate, I couldn't be more in love with these two. They fight over their littlest sister ("I get to hold her!"  "You've been hogging her all day!"), fight over who spends more time in the shower ("I do NOT spend an hour in the shower!"), and fight over who gets my MacBook ("She always gets to do her school on your computer!"  "But, all my stuff is on there!").  My world would be quite dramatical...
