Happy Birthday 10-year-old

Eliza turned 10 today. It's crazy! I don't feel old enough to have a 10-year-old. But, I do ... and I'm so grateful I do! She's to that pre-babysitting age, so it's been nice to leave her home with the children while I run to get the mail (or more recently when I ran to our old apartment [in the same complex] to pull things out of the freezer when we were moving). I know I'm not the best mother out there ... and hopefully none of you will turn me into the authorities ... but, there have been times when I've left all the children at home, in their beds asleep, and gone to the grocery store. Of course, Eliza is awake and watching tv or something, and the store is only three minutes away.

Anyway, I had forgotten this year to do our birthday posts ... so Adam's, Maryanne's, and Andrew's will be showing up in the next little while to make my blog book complete (although they'll be post-dated, so if you really want to see them, you'll have to look for them in December and March).

So, here are some fun facts about Eliza at ten-years-old:

1: Thing she misses most about Minnesota:

Her friends: Lindsay, Jack, Alex, Anna, Katie, Paige

2: Thing she likes the most about Arizona:

It's hot, and she can swim more often, and we're closer to family.

3: Favorite song:

Love Story, and You Belong with Me by Taylor Swift

4: What she hopes to be when she grows up:

An elementary school teacher.

5: Favorite past time:

Read, play on Webkinz.

6: What she hopes to accomplish this year:

Make good friends.

7: Favorite thing to do with Daddy:

Tickle Time. :) (Maybe this girl isn't growing up too quickly.)

8: Favorite thing to do with Mama:

Play games (board games and card games). (I have to add that this girl is almost as competitive and aggressive in game playing as I am ... yeah, she's been taught well.)

9: Favorite thing to do with her siblings:

Watch movies, play outside, and read books together.

10: What she likes the most about herself:

She's smart.

For good measure:

What do Jon and I like the most about Eliza???

I love that she is so responsible and I can always count on her to do the right thing. Example: I'd left the laptop in her room after we had finished school for the day. She came out a couple hours later telling me that she had visited "Little Big Planet" online ... which most of you are sitting there thinking, "So?" But, the moral of the story is that I told the children that they were not to go to that website because I haven't been able to check it out first. Anyway, she came out and told me that she had been on the website when she really didn't have to. That's how responsible and trustworthy she is. I also really love that I can almost have adult conversations with her ... it really makes it easier to stay at home because I get to have some fun interaction with someone else. It's been fun to watch her grow up over the years ... and I've been told that age 10 is the perfect age: still willing to comply to parental wishes, lots more responsibility, and also really fun. I can't wait to see how true that is!

(Jon will add his comments here later.)

I can't believe you have a 10 year-old either!! :) I'm still wrapping my mind around the fact that I have a 6 year-old (and that in June, I'll have FOUR children. :) ).

Eliza sounds like a great kid -- which means you must be a great mom! :)

I think you're an amazing Mom Marisa. You inspire me to be better, and reading how great a child Eliza is tells me that she learned her amazingness from you. It is hard to believe you're old enough to have a 10 year old. I remember seeing her for the first time at Kristina's and Derek's (my brother) graduation. She was so tiny. Do you remember that? Now she's all grown up. Crazy!!

Dude, isn't Liza like 7? I swear, a month ago when you guys were here, she was 7. ;)

She's growing up so fast! Now, we need some updated pictures. Do you have a birthday cake picture?

What a good kid! She was always such so great whenever I watched them or when I taught her class. I bet you can't wait until she can babysit for you all the time!

Pink Day

Today I was sifting through all the clothing and pulling out clothes that were stained and torn, as well as clothing the children had outgrown. There was a huge pile of clothing to sort through, and an ever growing pile of clothes to donate.  At one point, I pulled out a pink t-shirt and asked, "Whose is this?" Someone said it was Maryanne's, which couldn't have been true because it was a size 8. It wasn't her color anyway ... So I tossed it in the donate pile. (In hind sight, I now think my mom gave it to Maryanne for Christmas, and she said that she wasn't sure what size to get for Maryanne. Whoops on my part.) That's when Adam exclaimed that he wanted a pink shirt. Other children chimed in with, "It is his color." (Referring to his Dressing Your Truth type.) Adam bolted toward the donate pile and seized the shirt, promptly pulling it over his head and the collared shirt he had on. (Later he removed the collared shirt, after much cajoling from ...

85+ Books!

It's been almost a year since I started keeping track of all the books I've read.  When it's all in a list ... by date ... it really makes me realize how much I read!  I burned through almost a book a day in the month of January: 24 books total ... the greatest number of books in one month!  After compiling the list, I figured I may as well share it with all my friends!  I've organized them by genre/topic ... and now I realize I need to branch out more!  Books I read multiple times this year have asterisks. REGENCY/HISTORICAL ROMANCE The Apothecary's Daughter, Julie Klassen Edenbrooke*, Julianne Donaldson The Girl in the Gatehouse, Julie Klassen The Heiress of Winterwood, Sarah Ladd The Maid of Fairbourne Hall, Juie Klassen Lady of Milkweed Manor, Julie Klassen Short Straw Bride, Karen Witemeyer The Silent Governess, Julie Klassen The Tutor's Daughter, Julie Klassen CLEAN ROMANCE Bah, Humbug!, Heather Horrocks The Cubicle Next Door*, Siri L....

My Two Teenagers

As personalities come, these two girls are like night and day. Both are silly at times, and both can be serious at times. And yet, that rarely happens at the same time! We have entered the world of teenagers, and it is quite the dramatic world! My oldest daughter is dealing with all the drama that teenagers bring: ostracism, judging, and feeling friendless. My younger teenager is just full of fun dramatics: silly faces and expressions, acting wonky and crazy, and saying that "everyone is my friend, even their mom and dad!" At any rate, I couldn't be more in love with these two. They fight over their littlest sister ("I get to hold her!"  "You've been hogging her all day!"), fight over who spends more time in the shower ("I do NOT spend an hour in the shower!"), and fight over who gets my MacBook ("She always gets to do her school on your computer!"  "But, all my stuff is on there!").  My world would be quite dramatical...
