The night before Kate's "Friends" Party at school last week Jon and I were helping her to get her valentine/friend cards ready to take to school. I was a little alarmed when I noticed a message written on the outside of one of the envelopes. So, I looked at it and it read, "To: Jane* From: Kate I don't noe [know] if I am going to be your feind [friend]." I asked Kate why she wrote that on the envelope and she didn't answer, just looked down at her feet. I explained that the cards are for positive things. When I opened the envelope and took out the card so she could put it in different envelope, I thought I better check the inside of the card. Inside Kate had written, "I wandr [wonder] if you like pepile [people] like you. Love Kate."I was absolutely floored! I couldn't believe that my sweet Kate could say such a mean thing. Jon and I were a little worried about how "honest" she had been in all of the cards, so we proceeded to open them all and have Kate rewrite the cards. I guess she was a little confused when I told her to write a little note to everyone inside the cards. Thankfully the above example is the only one that was mean. The rest were just "honest." Some of them were a little humorous; like this one (*all the names have been changed):
"Dear John, I no [know] you like Jane. Love Kate"
Or, how about this one:
"Dear John, can you be my agint agin plees [agent again please]? Love Kate"
I have no idea what an agent is, I guess some role in a game during recess or something.
Here are some others:
"Dear John, Next time if you be meen [mean] on the bus I will tell the bus driver. Love Kate"
"Dear John, did I spell you'r name rong [wrong]? Love Kate" On this one she wrote "kiss" and then drew an arrow from the word to some lips she'd drawn.
And, this is one of my favorites. Because it's on a valentine, the irony is perfect.
"Dear John, I am not you'r gril feind [girlfriend]. Love Kate."
